The city of Los Angeles has passed a measure that prohibits the sale of commercially-bred dogs, cats, and rabbits in pet stores. Pet stores will only be permitted to sell animals obtained from animal rescue groups or shelters.

While similar bans have already been put into effect in nearby areas such as Irvine, Hermosa Beach, and West Hollywood, Los Angeles is the largest city in the U.S. to date to enact such an ordinance.
